Why Art? 10 Lessons Art Teach

Elliott Eisner, a Professor of Education at Stanford University has identified 10 lessons which are clarified through the study of Art in schools.

Ten Lessons the Arts Teach
• The arts teach children to make good judgments about qualitative relationships. Unlike much of the curriculum in which correct answers and rules prevail, in the arts, it is judgment rather than rules that prevail.

• The arts teach children that problems can have more than one solution and that questions can have more than one answer.

• The arts celebrate multiple perspectives. One of their large lessons is that there are many ways to see and interpret the world.

• The arts teach children that in complex forms of problem-solving purposes are seldom fixed, but change with circumstance and opportunity. Learning in the arts requires the ability and willingness to surrender to the unanticipated possibilities of the work as it unfolds.
• The arts make vivid the fact that words do not, in their literal form or number, exhaust what we can know. The limits of our language do not define the limits of our cognition.

• The arts teach students that small differences can have large effects. The arts traffic in subtleties.

• The arts teach students to think through and within a material. All art forms employ some means through which images become real.
• The arts help children learn to say what cannot be said. When children are invited to disclose what a work of art helps them feel, they must reach into their poetic capacities to find the words that will do the job.
• The arts enable us to have experience we can have from no other source and through such experience to discover the range and variety of what we are capable of feeling.

• The arts' position in the school curriculum symbolizes to the young what adults believe is important.

Winter Flower, Cyclaman plant

Another sign of winter is the cyclaman plant growing between the rocks, last year I all so posted a project using a heart shape stancil.

Using old notebook covers that I saved to use as a base for a future art project I cut heart shape stancils.

With that they drew with oil pastels the leaves of the cyclaman plant my favored winter flower. And waterdown guache was used for background.

The flowers was made on a trasparence sheet; using plasticine on the line drawing; in the same technique as the winter snail.

Art and Life

I love following Orly in her Art Journal Blog, as always her words are inspiring as well as the beautiful artwork.

Snail, Winter Collage,

After the rain the snails come out and we had a big rainstorm last week.

• For the background a collage with self torn tissue paper and trasparent paper  mixed with precut aluminium paper . Winter colors on black and .
• While the collage dryed they designed there snail on trasparence sheet; using plasticine on the line drawing.
• Then glued the trabsparent slide on the winter background and add a layer of glue on the plasticine.

Both stages of the project are very productive, and no matter what level they look good.

Hanging Artproject Inspired by Chihuly Chandelier

Inspired by Chihuli Chandelier we made this holiday group hanging artproject.

The meterial was donated to our hostel, metallic paper which is easy to cut and leftover self adhesive paper roll, reminds me of scrapbook paper, easy to open, you put paper on it and then return cleartop layer. 

This was a group project, some members cut the metallic paper, everyone designed 2 square self adhesive paper.
With help they formed those cylinders and roped them all together.

Holiday Light, Inspired by Chihuly/ Group Photo

 Here is last week art project "holiday candels" inspired by the glass artist Dale Chihuly  to celebrate the holiday of light, Chanukka.






Yesterday the members were happy to unwrapped the glass bowl and placed the candle in the bowl.
A group photo as promised.
